Why virtual Thematic lessons for Deaf Children?

I, Jessica, was born in a hearing family and was involved with Deaf Kids and Teen Club in Columbus, Ohio.  With a profound hearing loss, I remember when growing up with a cochlear implant on the left side and experienced the downsides of having cochlear implants on in the classroom with the sounds amplifying that I could hardly contain myself, and it was tough to concentrate in class. I didn’t do a lot of learning using English only, but let me tell you. That's not the entire story of what happened to me and we all have experienced good and bad teachers. Thankful to have had some wonderful teachers, who were active in the Deaf community and implemented their thematic units in the classroom and made it entertaining and accessible to learn with American Sign Language (ASL). As a child, I remember learning through a theme and anticipated for each unit, knowing what to expect and discover more about a specific topic in many different areas. Inside of me always wondered about many different questions within one topic, and this has inspired me to create a virtual thematic learning platform for Deaf children and anyone interested in being part of the Deaf community. This website is designed to promote language opportunities in a fun and hands-on way categorized using the theme-based approach in Sign Language and EnglishWith theme-based learning in Sign Language and English, children are thinking for themselves, following the thread of a topic to explore and discover moreThematic teaching allows us to make use of these valuable resources in ways that aren’t limiting or formulaic. It is imperative to choose a unit theme with what is already available to us and gives the child an opportunity to be independent thinkers.

My devotion is to promote explicit inclusion of the students' background experience and schema in pedagogical design for their language growth and academic endeavors using Sign Language.
